Hong Kong, September 19, 2024 – Organized by the Hong Kong, China Taekwondo Association, the World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships 2024 will be held in Hong Kong for the first time from November 30 to December 4, 2024, at the Hong Kong Coliseum in Hung Hom. Tickets are available from Thursday 26th September, with prices ranging from $50 to $100. The event is the largest in the taekwondo poomsae calendar, attracting nearly 1,200 athletes from over 80 countries and regions. The Hong Kong, China Team will also field around 50 athletes in providing a unique opportunity to compete on home ground.
The biennial World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships, first held in 2006, is one of the largest taekwondo events outside of the Olympic Games. This year’s championship has been awarded the “M” mark by the Major Sports Events Committee, enhancing Hong Kong’s image as Asia’s sports event capital and marking the event as a major, exciting, and thrilling sports spectacle.
The Hong Kong, China Team is entering some 50 athletes to compete across 27 events. The men’s team includes U30 men’s team poomsae representative Chan Chung Yin, ranked 24th in the world, who recently won a bronze medal in individual poomsae and a gold medal in team poomsae at the US Open; U40 representative Au Kei Yeung, ranked 43rd in the world; and Yeung Chi Ying, who won a silver medal in the O65 individual poomsae at the 2024 Asian Taekwondo Poomsae Championships. The women’s team features world-ranked 19th and Asian Championships bronze medallist Kong Lai Lee, and Chu Lok Yee, who placed 7th at last year’s Chengdu Universiade.

To further engage audiences in the championship activities, the Hong Kong, China Taekwondo Association will set up a carnival at the Hong Kong Coliseum’s outdoor piazza, featuring a series of taekwondo-themed games, exhibitions, and souvenir stalls. This will allow the public to participate in fun activities while watching the competition, in promoting a greater understanding of the sport of taekwondo.
Additionally, the Hong Kong Jockey Club, as the official community partner of the Hong Kong 2024 World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships, will collaborate with the Hong Kong, China Taekwondo Association in promoting the “Jockey Club World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships Community Programmes.” The initiative aims to raise public awareness on the sport of Taekwondo Poomsae; the giveaway of 3,500 tickets to underprivileged citizens, allowing them to enjoy exciting moment during the tournament with guided tours, as well as an once-in-a-lifetime experience to interact with top athletes, benefiting approximately 8,000 people.

About the Hong Kong, China Taekwondo Association
The Hong Kong, China Taekwondo Association has been established since 1967, boasting over 50 years of history. The Association is committed to the development of this global martial art and is the only taekwondo-specific sports body recognised and funded by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. To date, the Association has 46 affiliated clubs, over 1,000 training venues, and more than 130,000 practitioners. Additionally, we continue to assess new applications for taekwondo clubs and expand our training facilities.
The Association receives regular funding from the Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau (CSTB) and the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) to support various programmes and international events. Moreover, the Association is a member of World Taekwondo (WT), the Asian Taekwondo Union (ATU), the Hong Kong Sports Association and Olympic Committee (SF&OC), the Hong Kong Sports Institute (HKSI), and the Hong Kong Sports Association for the Persons with Disabilities (HKSAPD). This membership allows us to directly select qualified athletes to represent Hong Kong at global events such as the Olympic Games, Asian Games, East Asian Games, National Games, World Taekwondo Championships, and Asian Taekwondo Championships.
